Errors and Warnings when Converting to EPUB

Hello,
I am having difficulty converting a book into EPUB. The book was written in MS Word and saved as htm. When I convert to EPUB and run the file through the EPUB validator at http://validator.idpf.org I get errors messages such as the following:

Error while parsing file 'attribute "vlink" not allowed here; expected attribute "class", "dir", "id", "lang", "style", "title" or "xml:lang"'.

And:
Filename contains spaces, therefore URI escaping is necessary. Consider removing spaces from filename.

The file is split into 4 sections. The errors are all identified as being in the same location in each section. In other words, in section _split_000.htm the error is at Location 254 and Position 65. Then in section _split_001.htm the error is in the same Location and Position.

I need this file to be free of errors before I send it off for publication. I am not in any way an expert in conversion and could use a little help.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I converted from the docx and it is better but I'm still getting two error messages for the toc.ncx: Error while parsing file 'different playOrder values for navPoint/navTarget/pageTarget that refer to same target'.

Any idea how to fix this?

Open the (EPUB with) TOC tool. That should show you RED items, that you can modify so that they are now Green

The buttons on the right, will offer options. Basically, you are pointing at where the TOC should goto

Sorry if I seem completely incompetent, but what is TOC tool? Is this part of Calibre? Or a different application?

Press 'k', see Keyboard Shortcuts

Or use Preference->Toolbars and add the TOC Tool to toolbars.

Thanks for your help. Everything was red with nothing green but I played a hunch and checked the location for "Start" and saw that it was pointing to the cover. When I changed it and ran it through the validator, it came back with no errors. Such a relief!!!
