"DRM" in Ye Olden Days
Chain, Chest, Curse: Combating Book Theft in Medieval Times
http://medievalbooks.nl/2015/07/10/c...edieval-times/ In addition to the practical physical protection afforded by chains and book chests, curses offered a more ethereal form of "DRM". Quote:
“If anyone should steal it, let him know that on the Day of Judgement the most sainted martyr himself will be the accuser against him before the face of our Lord Jesus Christ” |

Curse = social DRM.
Equally as effective, too. |

Curses were thought to offer real protection, just as publishers think DRM does. And some buyers take watermarks seriously, just as some medievals took curses very seriously. |

The difference is that very few people believe in copyright. Much better to rely on the supernatural.

How about using Analogue Rights System Enforcement instead of DRM |

They are polite.
I'd be inclined to go with "magical thinking ". But superstitious also fits. The technically literate tend to go with "clueless". Last edited by fjtorres; 07-22-2015 at 11:49 AM. |

With each book I upload to the MR library I am tempted to deter potential rip-off artists by putting my favourite curse on the copyright page:
May you spend eternity rollerskating on cobblestones. |

I thought this thread was going to be about the 10NES DRM chip in the original Nintendo. The first DRM to make everyone's life difficult (it causes the notorious blinking screen problem).

That was the one Atari reverse engineered and let to the court battles that solved nothing but got walled gardens certified as legal, right?

In 100 years we will find current DRM schemes just as quaint.

Considering the books were the size of my torso, I think they effectively drm'd themselves...
