Pig in a poke?
When it comes time to get a Kindle, where can you go to see one and get a demo? Or is it only sold, like a pig in a poke, via the internet from Amazon?
I'm the kind of guy who likes to hold a product before I spend the money. I was able to do that with my Sony Reader, and the feel of quality was what finally pushed me over the edge to buy. Your comments are appreciated in advance. Ralph |

AFAIK, there's no way to get an official demo. (Depending on where you live, it may be possible to meet with someone & see how it works.) But Amazon has a 30-day no-questions return policy--you can buy it, try it for a couple of weeks, and if you return it in new condition with all its parts, get your money back if you don't like it.

It's in a poke, but it's no pig. But until you see someone reading on one in a coffee shop and awkwardly ask them if you can try it out, you're not going to know that for yourself.
I came from the PRS-500 myself, so I know where you're coming from. I recommend taking advantage of the 30-day full return policy and just trying it out for a month. Nothing lost if you don't like it. |

you can also take a look in our "see a device in a café near you" thread ; you might find someone living nearby who would be willing to give you a demo over a drink. you can leave a message stating your city / region and which device you're interested in, but also do go back through the thread to see whether anyone has posted already about that region, in which case you can contact them directly.

Also, you get to play with it for a month, to see if you really like it. Sometimes, it takes more than a few minutes to see if you like something, you have to actually use it and see how it works for you. Can't get any better than that. Don't some of the chain storers like Walmart and Costko have these things now? Or is it still a while before they get put on the shelves?

I bought 2 kindle 1s just on the recommendation of a client. She was leaving for a vacation, and was killing me with last minute stuff, and suddenly she just started gushing about her kindle. I don't know if I would gush to a stranger, but I am glad I bought it.

I was reading mine the other day while waiting for the novacaine to kick in. The dentist came in and said, "I must be the only person still walking around without one of those." I think our contraptions are beginning to catch on.
Her son is 10 and a bookworm. With allergies. Says his eyes start watering the minute he goes into a library. I told her that he could check out allergen-free e-library books to a Sony, and she was very interested. |
